Self-Direction

Have a Say in Your Life and Make Decisions that are Right for You

Self direction gives individuals with developmental disabilities (or the people who support them) the ability to decide on which supports and services you would like to meet your needs. The individual, and their family, choose how they receive the supports and who provides them.

When you self-direct your services, you have increased flexibility to choose the right supports for you, the staff you want to work with, and a schedule that works best for you. This gives you more control over how you want to structure your life.

Self-Direction can help you with:

  • Getting a job

  • Deciding where you want to live

  • Living safely and learning new skills

  • Learning about and enjoying activities in your community

  • Staying healthy and improving your health

  • How you spend your days

  • What you do in your spare time

  • Your relationships with family and friends

  • Who you hire to assist you

The Arc Chemung-Schuyler can assist you with this, help you learn more about self-direction, and guide you through the steps you need to take.

With assistance from a Broker, individuals with developmental disabilities and their families are able to control their own individualized budgets in order to hire and manage their own staff supports.
