Why Disability Enhances Work Ability
Why hire someone with a disability? In our experience, people with intellectual and other developmental disabilities are some of the most dedicated and indispensable members of an organization. They take their role seriously and they’re extremely proud to go to work every day–something they’re not afraid to share with everyone they know. Plus, having those responsibilities motivates them in other aspects of life, engaging them in the community and promoting their independence.
The Arc Chemung-Schuyler's Career and Employment Support Services (Vocational Training) works with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to provide training and develop the necessary skills to find, and maintain, meaningful employment. The Arc Chemung-Schuyler is dedicated to developing vocational skills and good work habits in the people we support as a way of increasing independence and assisting individuals to become productive and contributing members of the community. Personal growth and a sense of self-worth are achieved and enhanced. Ultimately, our goal is to have those in our vocational program working for employers in the community, receiving a paycheck from a community employer - being included in the community!
